HOW TO TAKE BLOOD PRESSURE (BP) AT HOME CORRECTLY

Congratulations, you are on the right page. You are here; maybe you have high blood pressure, and your doctor is asking you to do a blood pressure log at home. You forgot what your primary care doctor said, or maybe they don’t have time to teach you how to take BP properly. Whatever your reasons are, we are glad you found us.

First, make sure to choose the right blood pressure cuff size for your arm. Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended because they yield less reliable readings. Choosing the left arm or right arm to measure BP? Generally, prefer the left arm, but in general, any difference of 10 mmHg or less is considered normal and is not a cause for concern.

It is recommended to avoid exercise, smoking, and drinking alcohol or caffeine beverages 30 minutes before taking blood pressure readings.

  1. Before taking blood pressure readings, rest for at least 5 minutes.

  2. Sit on a stable chair, uncross your legs, and keep your feet flat on the floor. The arm should be relaxed and rest at heart level on a supported flat surface.

  3. Place the cuff directly 1-2 inches above the bend of the elbow and make sure the arrow/ the bottom of the cuff aligns correctly. Note: Do not take blood pressure measurements over clothes.

  4. Notice the reading and record the numbers. It is recommended to measure at the same time twice per day for 2-3 weeks, then once per day.

  5. Notice any abnormal readings and report them to your doctor.

Understand The Reading (Systolic/Diastolic)

  •  Systolic blood pressure: the first number of a blood pressure reading that indicates the amount of pressure exerted against the artery walls with each heartbeat (when the heart chambers are full, and the pressure is at its highest).

  • Diastolic blood pressure: The second number of the blood pressure reading that indicates the amount of pressure exerted against the artery walls in between heartbeats (when the heart chambers have emptied, and the pressure is at its lowest.
